Improving efficiency in the office through staff wellbeing

Homeworking is set to become the new normal for many of us, but with the excellent vaccine program in the UK taking effect, many will be happily heading back to the office. So how do we ensure the office environment is the best it can be? The wall street journal cited a study that interruptions in the workplace can cost six hours a day per staff member! Once distracted it can take 23 minutes for the average staff member to regain concentration. A major factor cited in this study for interruption was noise in the workplace. When noise issues were identified, and solutions put in place the following benefits were realized.

Increased concentration – Staff were able to concentrate on the job at hand for longer periods improving quality and throughput.

Improved health & wellbeing – Uncontrolled noise is proven to increase stress levels and affect mental health which in turn increases blood pressure and associated health issues,

Avoidance – Staff unconsciously spend more time away from areas that affect their health and wellbeing spending more time on comfort breaks, more time in the rest areas, and ultimately more time away from their workspace.

The need for privacy – At times we all have a need for privacy in the workplace, for working with colleagues, customers, or for ourselves.  Often breakout spaces and meeting rooms don’t deliver this and just because the door is shut does not make it private!”
